Sorry for the recent period of inactivity, I know a lot has been going on in the world of sports, and I have not posted anything in a long time. I apologize for not being more up to date, but I was away for a while and I had a lot of other things going on as well. Hopefully I will have more of an opportunity to post in the near future, and I will try to keep everyone up to date on the current news in the world of sports!!!

Coming to the Big Apple!

The Rangers may have finally found their scorer signing former Minnesota Wild star Marian Gaborik to a 5 year deal. ESPN reports that the Rangers have signed the Slovakian winger to a 5-year deal worth $7.5 million a year. The Rangers believe that Gaborik can bring the offensive power that they desperately need and are confident that Gaborik can put the puck in the net for them. Well, if healthy Gaborik can certainly do that, he has scored 40+ goals in multiple seasons, yet hasn’t been able to play 82 games in a season due to injury. His most recent health problem involved needing groin surgery during the season which limited him to only 17 games last year. However, in that time, he registered 23 points including 13 goals. Rangers GM Glen Sather stated that he is not worried about Gaborik’s health, citing that he spoke to Gaborik’s doctors for reassurance:

“He is very healthy. “Mario Lemieux had the surgery that he had. We don’t expect that there are going to be any problems.”

Gaborik also flourished offensively in a very defensive-minded system in Minnesota, so Sather thinks that Gaborik will thrive in John Tortorella’s offensive-minded, up-tempo attacking system. Hopefully Marian Gaborik coming to the Rangers will end their scoring problems and jump start an offense that needs a spark. Hopefully he can stay healthy enough to truly make a difference. We will only find out once the season starts, but as of right now I am happy to call Marian Gaborik a New York Ranger!!

The New York Rangers have made their first signing of the day as TSN reports them bringing enforcer Donald Brashear to NY for 2 years at $1.4 million per year. I’m not sure why they made this move instead of keeping Colton Orr for the same amount. Brashear has been hated by Rangers fans (including me) for a while due to his antics on the ice, so this is kind of a head scratcher. Well, Ranger fans will just have to hope that this move makes them more of an intimidating team to play against, and lets hope the combination of him and Avery gives them the much needed grit, which will make them tough to play against. The newest Blackhawk

Reports from numerous sources have revealed that star winger, Marian Hossa, has signed with the Chicago Blackhawks. Hossa apparently got the long-term deal he was looking for as it is reported he signed for 12 years at $5.2 million a year! 12 years seems to be an insane deal, but clearly the Blackhawks have confidence that this is a good move. However, in signing Hossa, the Blackhawks add another strong offensive force to the up -and-coming Toews, Kane tandem. Could this make Chicago a dominant force in the Western Conference? Well, i guess it should depend somewhat on how Hossa performs in next year’s playoffs. Either way, the Blackhawks make a huge splash by signing star forward, Marian Hossa, to a long 12-year deal!

Michael Jackson, nicknamed the “King of Pop” died yesterday in Los Angeles, California due to what is being reported now as cardiac arrest. Michael lived his life as a music legend, yet at the same time a magnet for controversy. His music is some of the most widely recognized in the world, and his Thriller album is the all-time worldwide best selling album ever. He was the most recognized person in the world in the ’70s and ’80s and he will be missed by many. His relationship to the world of sports was identified by his electrifying performance at Super Bowl XXVII, during the halftime show, in 1993. Jackson truly was a “Thriller” and he will be sorely missed. Rest In Peace Michael Jackson.

Rangers next 40-goal scorer?

It has been reported that the New York Rangers are targeting Ottawa Senators winger, Dany Heatley, for a possible blockbuster trade bringing him to Broadway. Sources say that Heatley’s agents have given the Senators a list of about 10 teams in which the star winger would accept the trade to, and the Blueshirts are reportedly  on that list. This would fill a much needed hole for the Rangers and Heatley would fit nicely in a Rangers lineup that desperately needs a goal scorer. Heatley would be the perfect compliment to a playmaking center like Scott Gomez, and if possible the Rangers should definitely try to bring Heatley to New York. Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports of the possibility of giving up D Michael Roszival, F Nikolai Zherdev, and possibly a prospect or a draft pick to try to bring this goal scorer to the Garden. We will keep following this situation and we will keep you posted, but if this is truly a possibility for the Blueshirts, it’s a no brainer, they should go for it. I would like to see Zherdev mature and grow as a Ranger, but if this is the only way, maybe it’d be worth it. We’ll keep you posted…

Jets Week One Starter?

I will probably make this a poll of the day at some point, but just to focus on the Quarterback battle for the New York Jets this offseason, what are your opinions for the man that will win the starting job this year. Come opening day, who will it be, Mark Sanchez or Kellen Clemens?

Newest Hall of Famer, Brian Leetch after winning the Conn Smythe in 1994!

The National Hockey League officially announced today the inductees for the Class of 2009 into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Among the inductees were Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robataille, and good news for Rangers fans, Brian Leetch! The Rangers Defenseman who won the Conn Smythe Trophy in the Terriffic run to the cup in 1994,  was inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, and rightfully so. In his career Leetch established himself as one of the NHL’s elite offensive defensemen, and became one of the Rangers greatest defensemen of all time! In 1994 he became the first (and remains the only) American born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Playoffs. The number 2 will forever hang from the Rafters at Madison Square Garden, and now his name will forever be etched among the greatest players to ever lace up the skates! Congrats Leetchy!!

In other news, it was reported the other day that Jonathan Papelbon of the Red Sox appeared on a Sirius Satellite  radio show, and when asked about considering the possibility of signing with the Yankees in 2011 when he becomes a free agent, he had this to say:

“Oh, of course. I mean, I think if we can’t come to an agreement on terms here in a Red Sox uniform, I mean I think that’s pretty much the writing on the wall.” 

He also later said that he would keep his options open for all teams in that time, should he not resign with the Red Sox, and that he just wants to play for a team and an atmosphere that would suit him correctly. So Yankee fans, we may hate him now, but what would you say to having Papelbon become the Yankees closer after our beloved Mo retires? Possibly a somewhat worthy replacement? Let’s hear what you have to say to the possibility of Yankee killers in pinstripes someday…
